What I love to do best

Suzie and her best girls, Melissa, Leslie, niece Meagan, and sister, MindyI’m not really here today. Well, I’m here–on this blog–but it’s not really Friday. It’s Tuesday, and my living room is awash with luggage, laundry, books, a supersized bag of candy for my book table, and a sheaf of papers and tickets and notes.

I’m on my way to speak at the She Speaks conference this weekend, and I get a bonus this time. Instead of flying in and flying out, I have scheduled four extra days to enjoy the beauty of Charlotte, NC.

And there’s an even bigger bonus–my daughter is flying with me.

Life has been hectic. Josh and Melissa moved in with me and Richard for three weeks. It’s been fun, and they’ve been good house guests. But it’s also been crowded, and finding personal time with Richard has been challenging. They’ve kind of moved out this past week. They took an air mattress and their clothes. Josh will come back this weekend to pick up the rest in a U-Haul.

And then there was the mammoth garage sale on Friday and Saturday. Ryan and Kristin are moving to Tulsa, and somehow these newlyweds had accumulated enough stuff that they needed a big clearance sale. I think sweet Kristin had every item from childhood on stashed in boxes, and Ryan is a clothes horse. My son had more clothes to sell than I have ever had in my closet. Plus he’s had 27 room mates (four at a time) in the last six years, and he had a plethora of stuff left behind by the guys when they transferred to another school, dropped out, graduated, married, or just plain moved on. They live in an apartment, so Mom’s house was the preferred destination for the garage sale. And mom was a good helper–I pushed boxes, climbed over stacks of old desks and end tables in Ryan’s storage facility, and at the end of the week I was a bit sore (Dotsie calls it Boomeritus).

Ryan and Kristin made $500. I threw in a few items. I made $58.65 and took Richard out for a steak dinner for Father’s Day. Mmmm.

But I digress. I look forward to this weekend because I will travel to the ocean with Melissa and her best friend, Emily. I will soak up the rays. I will breathe in the scent of the salt spray.

I will get to hang out with one of my favorite people, Lysa TerKeurst, founder of Proverbs 31 Ministries and She Speaks. And I get to keynote to the Next Generation women, teens who want to write and speak. Yay!

And then I have built in one more day so that Melissa and I get to spend a full day together in Charlotte, doing whatever we want.

I need it. I need the rest and relaxation. I need the ocean. I need the girlfriend time. I need to speak–it’s been too long; I took a three month break for weddings and graduations and other important life events.

So, today–the day you are reading this–this BBR gal is having a blast. I’m doing all the things I love best.

I’ll post some pics next week, I hope.

What do you love to do best?

I love to write and my reading armchair in the living room and on the porch are my favorite places to do just that. But I can and do write anywhere, everywhere, every chance I can carve out of my day.

Writing is my passion, and if I get to write by the sea with its characteristic sights and sounds, then that’s my little piece of heaven on earth.

Enjoy your time away Suzie, speaking and spending time with your daughter.

I love to write, as well. I also love playing tennis, and got to play last night–such fun. Since I work alone, tennis is my social outlet–my team played a match last night, then we stayed at the club just socializing over chips and guacamole!
the ocean sounds wonderful, tho! I’ve got to figure out a way to get there soon. I’ll be on the west coast in October, so I’ll have to include a trip to the beach then. :)

So far we’ve went to the Mint Museum in uptown Charlotte, rode the train to see some of the area, and ate at Cozmo’s (delicious!). Today is the actual event. I’m pumped.

It was such a great trip, on so many levels. The beach. The She Speaks conference. Hanging out with women who love speaking and/or writing. Delicious meals shared with my daughter and Emily and her new husband, Reed. Rest. Relaxation. Revitalized. Now, that’s a whole new way to come back from a speaking event!

Suzie, I can’t think of a better keynote to share with the younger generation of women who want to speak and write. I’m so very happy for you. That’s over the top!

It was so fun, Dotsie. A really great speaking weekend, friend weekend, daughter weekend. Rare and treasured.
