Life Turns On a Dime

We’ve all heard the saying before, but what does it really mean?

Last week I learned first hand. On Sunday morning my husband came from outside and said, “I need you.”

I made a funny comment. “Of course you need me…”

He then told me he needed my help taking his blood pressure.

Shortly thereafter I was calling 911.

Shortly after that we were heading to the hospital. The ER led to a room on the 4th floor. Monday morning brought a stress test. Monday afternoon the news that they had “found something.” Tuesday was the heart cath, followed by the news that they had “found something.” 4 blockages at 70%. A fifth at 30%. We had to make a decision…angioplasty with stents vs. bypass. We prayed and talked with our children for several hours before telling the dr. we wanted to go with the stents.

Wednesday was the surgery. Thursday we waited all day to find out whether or not Hubby Dearest (and his wife) could come home.

Thursday evening I got a call from my daughter. She’d been hit in a hit and run, pretty much totaling her new car…which she needs…to drive…to her new job. She had used all her money to buy the car…didn’t have full coverage insurance (too expensive) and was just sick. Friday evening my editor came in to begin the ICRS (International Christian Retailers Show) events on Sunday. Saturday was an all day Word Weavers (our writers group) event. In between all this, I’m making phone calls to check on my daughter’s mental wherewithall and my husband’s physical wherewithall.

Monday (yesterday) my daughter (with $900 she’d managed to scrape up) bought a used car from a personal seller. She drove it 2 miles and it broke down. Totally overheated. She called me. Nearly worn out from the experience. She let it cool down, added coolant, and drove it one mile. It broke down again. She pulled it into a parking lot and begged the store owner’s not to tow it. We can only pray they won’t.

She called again. Feeling somewhat more optimistic, but realistic at the same time. Life isn’t fair.

No, it isn’t.

And it turns on a dime.

But that means good things can happen, too. Life can turn from disaster to success. From the depths of dispair to the heights of joy.

God says in his Word to praise Him in ALL circumstances. And so we do. We don’t understand as life turns…but we praise Him.

And, if nothing else, we can reach under our feet and pull out a 10-cent piece. Something to begin again with. Something akin to the widow’s mite. Not a lot, but in God’s hands…so very much.

Oh my! I had to read your post twice because I couldn’t take it all in the first time. Mark and I just prayed together before he left for physical therapy (he can drive now!). We prayed for an extra measure of God’s grace to be poured out on your entire family!

I always manage to make it through the crisis just fine and then three weeks later, I collapse. But God is always there to catch me as I fall into his loving arms.

GREAT BIG HUGS TO ALL OF YOU!!!

Eva,

I certainly understand life turning on a dime. It has happened to me in the past 6 weeks.

I will be praying for you and hubby and your daughter.

Thankfully, we can believe God to be faithfully and trustworthy and His promises to be true.

I’m believing that all things CAND and DO work together for the good.

Blessings and continued prayers for you all.

Eva, as I read your post I thought of a quote I read from Madeleine l’Engle — “It is a good thing to have all the props pulled out from under us occasionally. It gives us some sense of what is rock under our feet, and what is sand.” Your rock is God — and their is none better. Thanks for the testimony of trusting in Him!
