I’ve felt like a slug all week. I flew home from San Diego last weekend. Monday a.m. I woke up and felt like a sledgehammer hit me. Even my teeth ached. I was running fever, chilling off and on.
I’m writing this on Wednesday because I fly out in the morning, and I won’t be able to blog on Friday. I’m praying I’ll be well at the conference. Right now it’s not looking so good.
I don’t have patience for sickness. Do you? I can’t remember the last time I felt ill, and this hit me so hard that I have only lain on the couch and looked pitiful. My voice has dropped several decibals, and when I cough it’s ugly. Richard hovers, wondering what he can do, but with that “OMG, I hope I don’t get this” look in his eye.
I don’t blame him, and yet I’m grateful for his gentle care. He even washed my hair yesterday. I took a long, hot bath and fell asleep with a towel on my head, and he had mercy on me.
They say the older you get, the more important it is to have a flu shot.
“Silliness!” I said in the past.
Next year I’ll be first in line.

You poor thing! I hope you’re better now and enjoying the conference. This is the first year I’ve actually considered getting the flu shot, but so far haven’t.
This link is for your husband, but more for you, if you haven’t already seen it. It’s a little video called Man Cold.

Suz,
you poor baby. I wish you lived nearby, I would bring you hot chicken soup!!
I never get flu shots either. keep thinking they are for “older” folks, and hearing anecdotal evidence about people who get them and still get sick.
praying that you’ll be better in time for your speaking assignments–I know that feeling of dread when you’re sick and you’re going to have to speak soon.
get lots of rest and drink a lot of herbal tea and even hot water with lemon–hydrate, hydrate!
Suze!!! Get better!!!!
Suzie, I became a firm believer in flu shots after I had the flu one year. Once you’ve been that sick, you never want to chance it again. I get my shot every year now.
I’ve got something that might give you a little lift — chocolate!
Sign up for the sweet giveaway that I posted on my blog to kick off the Valentine’s Day season — can’t hurt to give it a “shot”! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist that!)
Okay, I’m putting in my two cents’ worth (I worked in the medical field for 20 years!). The first time I got a flu shot, I fell deathly ill (make sure you’re not ALLERGIC to eggs!). Unfortunately, as speakers, we spend most of our life on planes, so I now have a back-up plan: Emergen-C. Works like a charm (raspberry flavor is my favorite!). You mix it with a cup of water…it even tastes good (really!). Here’s a secret: Wear a surgical mask on the airplane and bring your nasal spray (dry air passages collect germs), and you will be bumped up to first class IMMEDIATELY (no one wants to sit by someone with a mask!).
I’ve been absent from the blog for two weeks, so I have some catching up to do! Suzie, drink plenty of fluids, rest your voice, gargle with salt water, and you’ll be fine this weekend (I promise).
PRAYERS AND LOTS OF HUGS!
Connie

I am laughing thinking of you wearing a mask onto the plane! do you really do that?
What a great idea. I was on a plane last weekend, and i have two more trips in the next few weeks. So far I am healthy–lots of water and sleep when I am home.
I think I may have to go get myself a mask!
They’re cheaper by the dozen (masks I mean!). And, yes, I do wear them (and I have no problem getting a seat in first class because of it!). They want to keep me away from the coach passengers because I “scare” them! Imagine that?
Oooo!! Connie’s scary! Sorry. Couldn’t help it.
Scary sounds good if it upgrades to first class.
Suzie,
You poor thing. And having to travel too
Here’s two things that I’ve learned that work — Zicam for colds and Slippery Elm for sore throats.
Blessings of wellness and health, Suzie!
Susie, I am sorry to hear you have been suffering from the flu. I know it’s miserable. I hope today finds you doing better. We have had a horrible virus going around here (Jax, FL), it’s one of those awful bugs that hangs on for weeks. My son has it right now, he’s been sick for 3 weeks, has developed a very severe case of bronchitis. He’s on some good meds now and resting, and sounding a bit better. I manage a karate school and it’s been making the rounds with the kids. It’s definitely that time of year.
I’m home tonight, and I’ve learned something very important. Don’t travel when you are ill. It’s been a tough four days, and tomorrow I have promised myself I will curl up in my warm OU blanket and do nothing but sleep and drink chicken broth–and take EmergenC–and maybe even wear a mask. : )
Suz, I’m picturing you snuggled up and caring for yourself. Feel better. When you are upt to it, tell us about your weekend.
I’ve never gotten a flu shot. Hubby did once, and he was sicker than I’ve ever seen him. I had to drive him to the doctor’s office. It was horrendous. He hasn’t gotten another one in over 20 years and has been well.
Connie, masks all around for my whole family next time we travel. Love the idea. What a hoot.
Okay, I need to explain something…
I worked in the medical field for 20 years and I learned a lot from physicians on how to stay well. One of the doctors was so paranoid about germs on planes, she actually got sick before she physically boarded! She wore a surgical mask, brought saline nasal spray, drank Emergen-C, and slipped a moist wash cloth under her mask to help moisten the air! Talk about scarry…would you want to sit by someone like that?!?!?
I try to be a little more discreet, but the mask is a dead giveaway that something’s not quite right!
HUGS to you sweet Suzie!
PS - I actually led a retreat last year with a raging temp of 102 and thought I would die. Everyone commented on how rosy my cheeks were. After each session I went back to my hotel room and put a sign on the doorknob”do not disturb,” which really defeated my purpose for being there!
