Shh. I want to let you in on a secret: I love Pixar movies. Toy Story. Monster, Inc. Shrek! Ratatoullie
This weekend I will pose as one of the characters in one of my favorite Pixar movies, The Incredibles. I will be ElastiGirl!
In The Incredibles, ElastiGirl is the mother who can stretch like elastic, catupulting her arms to embrace her kids from dangerous villians, elasticizing into a make-shift boat so her loved ones can climb in and navigate the stormy waters. She can reach the stove to pull out a hot casserole and also catch the kid falling down the stairs.
Sound familiar?
It’s been a long time since I’ve had to be ElastiGirl… er, I mean ElastiMom. But this weekend five of my children: Josh (SIL), Melissa, Leslie, Ryan, and Kristin (DIL) graduate at the same time, on the same day, in three different cities at five different locations. Leslie is receiving her law degree. Melissa and Ryan, their Master’s. Kristin and Josh, their undergrad. How am I going to do it?
I’m digging through my closet for my ElastiGirl costume. So far, it hasn’t surfaced.
This is what we’ve worked out so far.
- Friday
Richard and I will attend Ryan’s commencement in Tahlequah at 3. We will then jet to Norman (3 hours away) and attend Josh, Melissa, and Leslie’s commencement, which starts at 7.
- Saturday
Richard’s parents are going to Tahlequah, and splitting to attend Kristin’s and Ryan’s commencement and ceremonies.
I will attend Leslie’s graduation and Richard will attend Melissa’s. After a quick graduation party in Norman, Richard and I will jet to Tahlequah, OK and meet up with Kristin and Ryan and take them out to dinner.
- Sunday
Kids all crash at our house Sunday a.m. We watch the videos of everyone as they walk across the stage, cheer loudly, give small presents, and then order delish’ Sam and Ella’s pizza (if you say “Sam and Ella” really quick, it sounds like a bacterial food plague).
Oh, and it’s Mother’s Day weekend too.
Happy Mother’s Day to me. Being with my kiddos–even though it’s crazy busy–is a wonderful gift.
Suzie, who posted earlier and looks forward to reading your comments when I arrive home.
PS: If Mother’s Day is difficult or chaotic, for whatever reason, I hope you feel this Boomer Babe reaching out to you with a hug to let you know that another mother realizes it’s hard work. It’s joyfilled, and sometimes the hardest thing you’ll ever do.
Perhaps you would be interested in reading an interview featured this weekend on Christian Broadcast Network with me and editorial producer, Belinda Elliot. The feature is ”Be The Mom You Want to Be” and is an in-depth interview as I talk about painful pasts, parenting, letting go, forgiving, setting boundaries, healing, and much more at http://cbn.com (It’s one of the flashing articles on the front page - simply click and you’ll find the entire interview.)
From one mother to another, Happy Mother’s Day to you.

I’m a huge Pixar fan too, along with my son.
But wow, Suz. I’ll pray you find the Elastigirl costume, or at the very least, that your flights on are on time!
Happy Mother’s Day! What a gift, to have all those graduates (and Richard just before them!)! Congratulations!
Suzie - I thought of you and prayed for you all weekend - with your schedule and the weather so crazy there, the prayer line was tied up for hours!
Post and let us know how Elasti-Mom conquered all the celebrations and storms.
Suz, I don’t know how you do it. But thanks to your loving releationship with your hubby, you guys work it out. Joining you with all your exciting news.
Hey, can I borrow your ElastiGirl costume when you’re finished with it? With 4 kids ages 15, 16, 17, and 20, I may need it in the future.
I hope you had an amazing weekend, Suzi. What precious memories to treasure and ponder in your heart.
so I hope you will post this week and tell us how the weekend went!!
I was just happy my daughter’s soccer game (yes, scheduled for Mother’s Day at 11:30) got rained out so I could stay home and relax!
It was a crazy, wonderful weekend where I felt happy and torn. I’ll share details later. I spoke Monday, exhibited at a Success expo on Tuesday (today), and plan to veg tonight.
