BBR Book Club Book of the Month

Greetings! Allison is away at the Writing for the Soul Conference in Colorado Springs, CO this weekend. She’s asked me, Karen Power, to fill in for the day.

As you know Allison is picking a book to review each month and the first Saturday of each month begins the discussion amongst us. Did you enjoy last month’s book, Doesn’t She Look Natural? by Angela Hunt?

This month we’re going to take a little different spin on things. Allison is an avid reader and has been kind enough to lend me some of her books to read as she helps me expand my reading horizon. One of her favorite authors is Jodi Picoult, and she’s quickly becoming one of my favs too.

Honestly, I’d never heard of Jodi Picoult until Allison pulled my head out of the sand, loaned me her tabbed and marked copy of My Sister’s Keeper and said something to the effect of “Go forth and read it! You’ll be hooked!” And indeed I was. I’m now reading my second Jodi Picoult book, Nineteen Minutes.

So for the February Boomer Babes Rock! Book Club Book of the Month (how’s that for a tongue twister?), let’s discuss the concept of learning about new authors via a friend’s recommendation and also discussing any of Jodi Picoult’s books. You game?

I haven’t been reading much fiction lately but it is interesting how we come to read what we do. I really do like to read based on friends recommendations. I also like to read by author. It’s very interesting after you’ve read 3 or 4 books by the same author. Sometimes I start to detect a pattern or formula and lose interest. What I really enjoy is when I can see an author grow in their craft (or even in faith, when it comes to Christian authors) over the years. I was just thinking the same today about Chris Tomlin’s music, how much he’s grown over the years.

Some of the best books I’ve read over the past year were those recommended by friends. A friend actually turned me on to Jodi Picoult’s work . . . and I really enjoyed My Sister’s Keeper.

    Interesting topic!

    Dianne,

I understand your comment about figuring out an author’s pattern or formula. I love Gayle Roper’s books, however, after reading 2 or 3, they are all similar in pattern. Yet good though.

I have found in the two Jodi Picoult books that I’ve read that she has a method to her writing but haven’t found a pattern. What I like most about her books is the multiple points of view. She really can get into the head of the different characters.
